Jesper Bror Palmqvist works with identity as a form of therapy in his practice. He is interested in indefinable and queer identities, and explores how these identities are conditioned and shaped within society through aesthetics, materiality, and narrative structures. Drawing from his own biography, he allows the relationships, structures, and systems he encounters to move between the private and the public within his artistic work.
Working across media including painting, film, installation, and sculpture, he searches for loopholes through which to evade the heterosexual and white logic that dominates the public sphere. Particular attention is given to the choice of materials and tonalities. He draws upon objects, scenes, folklore, and documents from his surroundings, each carrying its own history, while his interventions add further layers of meaning. The conceptual and the intuitive operate as complementary forces, informing and enriching one another. By distributing narratives across multiple layers, he creates the possibility of developing a distinct language with the viewer, positioning the work beyond conventional forms of judgment and evaluation.
